I always thought it was a miracle! Can I just say …. when they say ‘ put him on a hot water bottle ‘ the hot water bottle should be filled with WARM water not HOT and wrap the hamster in a cloth or tissues don’t but him directly onto a hot water bottle her will end up with burns ! I know people are not stupid but I have seen this done. Uh hamsters don’t hiberante. Their body starts shutting down in what’s called torpor. Just like any other person or animal would if critically cold for too long. Keep your hamsters away from fluctuating temperature areas like Windows or radiators and ensure they have plenty of items to keep them warm during the winter months. This is why shops do not warn you about hibernation, it doesn’t happen. Yes, nearly happened to my as well.. found my hamster cold and stiff one morning – but I needed to go to work, so I just put him in a box with some food and a piece of cucumber – this is how I always bury pets – I left the box open and put it in the cage (it felt wrong to leave the box out on the floor) – thank good – when I came home, my hamster was merrely running around…My farther had a pet turtle once. It went into hibernation… My grand mother thought it was dead and threw it into the stove… End of story…This happened to our neighbours hamster. We buried him wrapped up in a towel. When we discovered what we’d done dug him up but never found him or the towel. We were 8 years old at the time. This has haunted me for 54 years. Well here’s the saddest story about my daughter’s hamster!!!! He was the best at escaping THE BEST AT IT and after 2 months off been missing the longest time ever I come home after a week holiday to find an awful smell in my kitchen thinking some food had went off or something ….. A few days before I left for my holiday I was decorating and had some more to do .. I left the paste bucket in my kitchen and my mother phones me to tell me she found were the smell was coming from after 2 months the poor wee thing came back and managed ( I will never know how ) to climb into the paste bucket and died  never been so traumatised in all my life and heartbroken for a tiny wee animal so sad hope it was a fast death for him .. we cried for a few days was 2 sad … So no more pets in my house !!! This is surely in every hamster keeping book ever written? How about before you take on the responsibility for a living creature you read up on it first?Another example of pet owners being in ignorance of their pet’s requirements. It reminds me of someone who used to turn off the heater and filter on their tropical aquarium at night, when they turned the lights off. No excuse for this sort of ignorance. We once had a hamster who “died” when I put his cage in the garage one day (the kids didn’t clean the cage and I could smell it). The next morning I had to break the news to the kids that their beloved pet had died and that we would bury him when they came home from school. By the time they got home from school, the “dead” hamster was running around in his wheel and was perfectly normal! I think the garage was cold and he had slipped into hibernation. Hammy was re-named “:Lazarus”.
